The answer is, yes from an out-of-universe standpoint, in that they have eclipsed the original team in popularity and recognition by far. From an in-universe standpoint, both yes and no: this team, unlike the 1975 New X-Men, is not a direct continuation of the previous Guardians and formed completely independently. However, they did (eventually) take the name “Guardians of the Galaxy” from the original, and defunct, team.
